Community Education prepares its after-school program

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green – Warren County Community Education is gearing up for its after-school program as the new school year approaches.

The program provides students with a safe and engaging environment between the end of the school day and when parents can pick them up. 

Children receive homework help, exercise, snacks, and participate in other activities throughout the afternoon.

Organizers say they are expecting a staffing shortage at the start of the school year, at least until WKU students return to campus. 

The program is hoping to welcome back returning staff while recruiting more Hilltoppers to fill open positions.

“It’s a great opportunity,” said Community Education School Program Coordinator Jarrod Shive. “For anybody who wants to work with kids, it’s a job where you can take away so many different experiences and use them in any career you may be seeking.”

He also spoke on why he feels the program is helpful to the parents who enroll their children in the program.

“Obviously, we live in a time now where parents are working sometimes from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., depending on their jobs,” Shive said. “We fill in those gaps. It’s a safe environment, and it’s in the school that the student attends. It’s a wonderful opportunity for kids to interact with students they might not see on a daily basis.”
