Bowling Green Humane Society calls on community for shelter clean-up day
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — With more than 500 animals in its care and one of its busiest summers yet, the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society is asking the community to lend a hand during an upcoming clean-up day aimed at improving the shelter grounds.
The shelter will host its Community Clean-Up Day on Saturday, June 27 at the BGWCHS Adoption Center on Louisville Road. Volunteers are invited to help tackle outdoor projects like pulling weeds, picking up debris and organizing supplies.
Katlyn Hare, adoption counselor and assistant rescue coordinator, said the idea came after walking the property and realizing there was work to be done.
“A lot of things need to be picked up and worked on,” Hare said. “So I threw the idea out to our marketing team, and we were all like, ‘yes — let’s do it.’”
Hare said the shelter has seen this kind of support before. Following the December 2021 tornadoes, BGWCHS hosted a similar clean-up day after storm debris scattered across the property.
“The turnout was amazing,” Hare said. “Our property looked phenomenal.”
This time, the focus will be on the outside of the facility, helping improve the shelter’s appearance for visitors and creating a cleaner environment for staff.
“Most of the animals are indoors, so this is really about making the outside look better for people coming in,” Hare said.
Volunteers do not need to bring supplies — the shelter will provide everything needed. Hare recommends wearing clothes and shoes that can get dirty.
The shelter encourages both new and returning volunteers to participate. First-time volunteers can fill out an application and waiver online ahead of time to speed up check-in.
Hare said community support continues to be one of the shelter’s greatest strengths.
“Any time we need anything at all, they are always here for us,” Hare said. “We appreciate it so much.”
The clean-up will begin at 9 a.m. at the BGWCHS Adoption Center, located at 1924 Louisville Road.
