Bowling Green celebrates Bike Month, cycling growth
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) – Bowling Green officials and community advocates gathered Thursday afternoon to celebrate National Bike Month and recognize the city’s growing commitment to cycling accessibility and safety.
During the event, Bowling Green was recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community through efforts led by BikeWalk BG, a program connected to the Metropolitan Planning Organization within the City-County Planning Commission.
Community leaders highlighted the organization’s work to expand bicycle infrastructure, promote cycling education and encourage residents to spend more time outdoors.
Natasha Smith with BikeWalk BG said the recognition reflects the city’s continued investment in cycling opportunities.
“Which really says a lot to how much Bowling Green does value cycling and a commitment to improve the conditions here,” Smith said.
BikeWalk BG works alongside local agencies and organizations to improve bike lanes, greenways and trail systems throughout the city. The group also organizes community bike rides and educational programs in local schools.
“Our mission is to just get people outside active and to be able to have spaces to do it safely,” Smith said.
As part of the ceremony, local officials also proclaimed May as Bicycle Month in Bowling Green and Warren County. The proclamation noted bicycling’s benefits to public health, tourism, local businesses and roadway safety.
Organizers said they hope the recognition and continued expansion of cycling infrastructure will encourage more residents to explore Bowling Green by bike.
