Bike safety tips for National Safety Month

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – June is National Safety Month, and around this time of year, everyone’s outside enjoying the season by going for a walk or riding a bicycle.

Being mindful of pedestrians, whether they are walking or riding a bike, can save a life. For bicyclists, wearing a helmet, having the proper lights and riding in the proper lanes not only keeps them safe – it also helps drivers on the road.

If you’re on your daily walk, using a crosswalk, remain on a sidewalk and wear bright colors to guarantee drivers can see you.

Natasha Smith, coordinator at Bike Walk BG, says, “We do. We all share the roads. Even if somebody walks on a sidewalk, at some point, they’re going to cross the road. We got crosswalks for that. And sometimes people have to walk in the road if there is no sidewalk. But so it’s just our shared responsibility to all watch out for each other. And definitely always have to watch out for yourself in case the other guy’s not.”

Along with information on safety, Bicycle Co-op also provides courses that can help you learn to repair your bike.
