Biggest horse races of the year for Kentucky Downs

FRANKLIN, Ky.-Over the weekend, the biggest races of the year for Kentucky Downs took place.

Friday through Sunday, locals and visitors from out of state flocked to the track to watch nearly a dozen races every day, enjoy cocktails, and bet on horses.

The weekend is one of the shortest thoroughbred horse racing meets in North America and features more than $15 million in purses.

General admission for attendees was free and VIP seating was available for purchase.

John Wholihan, Director of Marketing, says the weekend brings a lot of tourism to South Central Kentucky.

“You tend to get people from both Tennessee and Kentucky and a lot of the horse people are up in Lexington and Louisville so they tend to find our little corner of the state which is exciting. Then you have a lot of horse racing in Indiana and other nearby states so you get people from other places to come out specifically for the races,” said John.
