BG Freedom Walkers host third annual “A Merry Meal”

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – This weekend was full of good will in Bowling Green as the BG Freedom Walkers invited the community out to a free meal for those who might find themselves in a tighter spot this holiday season.

Over at the Duck Shack, a full house could be found enjoying a Christmas dinner together this past Sunday, Dec. 19.

Karika Nelson, founder of the BG Freedom Walkers, said in an interview with News 40 that “this is our third annual ‘A Merry Meal’ community Christmas dinner that we do every year to give back to the families. Especially after covid and the tornado last year, our biggest thing is promoting peace love diversity and unity to our community.”

The BG Freedom Walkers put on their dinner Sunday night with some help from community sponsors to offer a menu of chicken, macaroni, vegetable dishes and a variety of sweets.

Summer Shannon of the BG Freedom Walkers also took some time to talk to News 40.

She said, “… with the state of the economy right now, a lot of people can’t afford Christmas, a lot of people can’t afford to cook this year. So just being able to give back to people who might not have that opportunity, and still recovering from covid too. Just being able to help out those families and make sure everyone has a good holiday is just important to us.”

Toward the end of dinner, the organization also gave away some kids clothes and extra canned goods.
