Barren County Schools Farm to School coordinator attends USDA event
WASHINGTON – Barren County Schools says Dr. Andy Joe Moore, Barren County Schools Farm to School coordinator, recently represented the district in Washington, D.C., at “Harvest to Hallways: A Celebration of Farmers and Schools.”
According to the district, the event brought together leaders and advocates from across the country to highlight the important connection between American agriculture and the meals served in schools. Moore joined attendees for conversations focused on strengthening partnerships between schools and local farmers, expanding access to fresh, locally grown foods, and helping students better understand where their food comes from.
Barren County Schools says it has continued to expand its Farm to School efforts, bringing locally grown foods to student trays while also giving students opportunities to experience agriculture firsthand through school gardens, greenhouses, tower gardens, agricultural programs and their own family farms.
Moore commented, “I am honored and humbled to have been given the opportunity to attend this event and showcase, on a national level, the outstanding work that our students are accomplishing with our farm-to-school efforts in Barren County. As a result of Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell’s Food is Medicine initiative, local food production and the farm-to-school model in Kentucky are thriving. Ultimately, the spirit of the American Farmer has always been a cornerstone of our country, and with that same spirit, our students in Barren County are making a profound impact on a movement that is taking place nationwide.”
Moore’s participation provided an opportunity to share Barren County’s work while learning from Farm to School efforts happening across the country.
