INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Scott Dixon has run out of fuel early in the Indianapolis 500 in a significant setback for the race favorite. He started from the pole and was the oddsmakers favorite to win his second Indy 500. But the six-time IndyCar champion was caught when pit road closed because of a crash involving Stefan Wilson. It caused Dixon to run out of gas and he dropped to 31st and a lap off the pace. The Indy 500 was held in front of 135,000 spectators, the largest sporting event in the world since the start of the pandemic.
