Europe-bound migrants found amid broken glass, toxic ash

MADRID (AP) — Spanish authorities say they have found and rescued 41 migrants who tried to reach continental Europe from North Africa last week. Some of them were hiding inside a container of discarded glass bottles and a bag of toxic ash. Four of the people found Friday had buried themselves in broken glass destined for recycling. They were trying to get to Europe aboard a ship traveling from the Spanish port of Melilla, an enclave in northern Africa. Nearly 11,700 people were found last year inside the port’s security perimeter. In 2021, the figure so far has reached 1,781 migrants. Using search dogs and microphones to detect heartbeats, police often find people hiding amid the cargo.
