Bowling Green man credited with saving women from building fire

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- A Bowling Green man is being called a hero after he ran into a burning building and assisted two women out.

The fire broke out Monday at the Chestnut Center on Chestnut Street.

Jim Maroney, who works across the street, ran into the building before first responders arrived. He and another man were able to get the women out safely, one of whom uses a wheelchair.

Maroney said he burned his hand on the door when exiting the building, but would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

“I wasn’t thinking. I just went in there. Anyone else would have done the same thing. It’s not a big deal,” Maroney said. “I don’t even know who the other guy is. He ought to be standing here. I just did what needed to be done to make sure everybody was safe.”

Maroney said he is thankful for the other man who assisted him, but is unsure of his name.
