American Legion aims to help more homeless veterans in 2019

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – When a homeless veteran is in need of shelter, they reach out to Veterans Affairs for assistance.

But once they receive housing, they still need a way to fill their home with the things they need.

That’s where the local American Legion Post 23 comes in, but they still need the community’s help.

The VA Clinic works with the Salvation Army and Hotel Inc. to help veterans who need section 8 housing.

Once the veteran is approved, the VA Clinic contacts the Good Deeds Club who sends volunteers to deep clean the home.

The American Legion assists with furnishing the home completely, such as furniture, TVs, silverware and more.

They also use funds from gaming machines, bingo and donations to fund the furnishings.

Beyond that, the American Legion also feeds those in need, providing 140 meals this past Christmas.

Something Jim Manley, the Chief Finance Officer, is proud of.

The PVA Office and Southern Kentucky Claims Association also assisted with the Christmas meals in December by donating money.

For 2019, the VA Clinic needs help getting rid of clothing from their clothing closet and donations of easy-open canned goods.
