Summer food distribution plans for Allen County
SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. – Today marked the last day of home delivery for the Allen County Schools Meal Delivery Program. With the scheduled school year coming to an end, the program is going to look a little different going forward.
In Allen County, about 75% of students are on free and reduced lunch.
And with the school year coming to a close, summer feeding sites are about to begin, according to Travis Hamby, the superintendent of Allen County Schools
“Typically, our summer feeding program begins in early June. This year with the current circumstances that we are facing as a community dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. We wanted to be sure that our families had access to meals earlier,” said Hamby.
In place of delivering meals to homes, they’ll be available for pick up through the district’s Summer Feeding Program.
This version of the program is set to begin on Wednesday and continue each Wednesday at various locations throughout the county.
Because some of these kids may not have enough food without the help of the schools, Allen County School Food Service Director Robin Herrington said she’s glad to help.
“These kids are so important to us, that is why we do what we do. We are here for the kids. It’s brought the whole district closer together during this process because that’s ultimately, our job is to take care of the kids, educate the kids, feed the kids, and we love them and that’s what we are here for,” said Herrington.
One of the school bus drivers, Charles Myers, is thankful the county rallies behind the kids.
“We are fortunate here in the county that we have the personnel and the people that are willing to do that for our children here at the school and you know, people don’t think a lot about it but our children are our future and we are supposed to be an example,” said Myers.
Families must call to reserve their five days worth of meals for each separate location.
