Fire Prevention Week and Fall Forest Fire Hazard Season has started

SOUTH-CENTRAL KENTUCKY – Fall Forest Fire Hazard season started Oct. 1, and a fire ban is in place.

“We want to protect life. By having these things, we are greatly minimizing the risk of a fire and possible loss of life,” said Dustin Embry, the chief of the Morgantown Fire Department.

Fall season activities that require fire seem fun, like roasting s’mores, but fire safety education is essential. Embry said when you’re outside, keep a fire suppressant nearby.

“Make sure you have a water hose close, and make sure there is not something around the pit that a fire ember could land on and start a bigger fire,” he said.

According to the U. S. Fire Administration, bedrooms were the leading location of where civilian fire fatalities occurred. Embry said families should practice for and be prepared in fire emergencies.

“Have an escape plan. Know how to get out of your house and especially if you have children, make sure they know how to get out of your house because if a fire happens, it’s very hectic,” he said.

In dangerous situations where fire extinguishing is unsuccessful, clear the house or location of all living life, get far away from the fire and call law enforcement.

Though there are certain times of the year that warrant more attention on fire safety, Embry said fire education should always abide.

“These things are important to remember year-round, not just in Fire Prevention Week,” he said.
