Harmful algal bloom confirmed on Caneyville Reservoir

FRANKFORT, Ky. – A health advisory is active due to a harmful algal bloom detected at Caneyville Reservoir, health officials say.

According to a release by Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet on Wednesday, a sample was collected Sept. 9 indicated the presence of a harmful algal bloom in the area.

Health officials say the reservoir will not be used as a public drinking water source.

The release further states HABs occur when there are “excess nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen), sunny conditions, warm temperatures and low-flow or low-water conditions.

They may appear as slicks of opaque, bright-green paint, but closer inspection often reveals a grainy, sawdust-like appearance, health officials say.

Recreational activities that result in physical contact with water such as swimming and wading are not recommended in areas impacted by HABs, according to the release.

If you have contact with water containing blue-green algae, health officials say to rinse with clean, fresh water. In some cases, a rash will appear after prolonged exposure. Other symptoms may include stomach pain, headache, coughing, watery eyes, nose irritation or sore throat, the release says. Children and people who are prone to respiratory allergies or asthma may be particularly sensitive to HABs. If symptoms persist, contact a healthcare provider.
