How to drain your pool safely
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The City of Bowling Green’s Public Works is reminding pool owners of how to properly and safely drain their pools.
Pool owners should allow 10 days for water to sit uncovered since the last time chemicals were added so that it can naturally dechlorinate with help from the sun.
Then, test the water to make sure chlorine levels are essentially zero and the pH is between 6-8.
“There are other chemicals, algaecides, in there along with that chlorine. If we allow those to naturally dissipate in that seven to 10 days while we let that sit, let the movie break that down, then it’s not going to be available to potentially cause an imbalance in our system. Because, of course, storm water in Bowling Green is not treated. It gets directly injected into the cave system and our karst,” said Courtenay Howell, the environmental compliance coordinator for Bowling Green Public Works.
Slowly drain your pool into the grass, not directly into the storm drain or toward neighboring properties as a large influx of water can cause damage.
