Bowling Green driver charged after fatal pedestrian incident in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A Bowling Green driver has been charged after a pedestrian died and three others were injured in Nashville, Tennessee last month.

According to an update released by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, the driver, 87-year-old Thomas Cahill of Bowling Green, is charged with one count of failure to yield resulting in death and three counts of failure to yeild resulting in serious injury.

Authorities say following a consultation with the District Attorney’s Office, Cahill was issued the four misdemeanor citations Thrusday night in Nashville.

His booking date is set for Oct. 1, police say.

According to authorities, an investigation shows Cahill was traveling south on Fourth Avenue North in a sedan when he stopped short of the Broadway intersection.

Police say the traffic signal was red for Fourth Avenue, and pedestrians had the walk signal to cross the street.

For an unknown reason, police say Cahill accelerated, crossing through the intersection during the red light and striking pedestrians. Cahill stopped the car on Fourth Avenue South and exited the vehicle, authorities say.

He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and was discharged a few days later. Cahill has told officers that he has no recollection of what occurred, according to police.

The victim killed in the collision was identified as 58-year-old Timothy Wedlock, who was visiting from Australia, police say. Two of the three surviving pedestrians remain hospitalized, including 44-year-old Matthew Gregg of Jacksonville, Florida and 58-year-old Dianne Cooper of Parsons, Tennessee. The third pedestrian, 21-year-old Kathleen Broderick of Knoxville, Tennessee, was discharged from the hospital on Aug. 2.
