WHITESBURG, Ky. – Two people are injured and one person is dead after a reported shooting incident on Saturday in Letcher County.

According to the Kentucky State Police, troopers say they received a 911 call Saturday at 4:39 p.m. reporting a shooting had occurred at a laundromat on Jenkins Road in the Whitesburg community of Letcher County.

Troopers say they responded to the scene with Whitesburg police, Letcher County deputies and emergency medical personnel.

Upon arrival, first responders say they located 54-year-old Sarah Wyatt of Whitesburg with multiple gunshot wounds.

Authorities say she was flown to Pikeville Medical Center, where she is currently listed in critical condition.

Troopers say a preliminary investigation revealed the suspect, 62-year-old Richard Wyatt of Whitesburg, fled the scene with his son, 33-year-old Richard Wyatt Jr. of Whitesburg, to a residence on Jenkins Road.

Authorities say once there, Richard Wyatt Sr. sustained a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to troopers, he died at the scene.

The bullet also struck Richard Wyatt Jr., authorities say, who drove himself to Whitesburg ARH Hospital before being taken to Pikeville Medical Center for treatment. He was last listed in stable condition over the weekend, according to troopers.

Authorities say Richard Wyatt Sr. was pronounced dead at the scene by the Letcher County Coroner’s Office.

The investigation remains ongoing.
