City of Morgantown holds Memorial Day program to honor soldiers

MORGANTOWN, Ky. – The VFW Auxiliary 5837 held a Memorial Day Program in front of the Butler County courthouse Monday morning to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States.
Community members, public officials, and members of Cub Scout Pack 208 came out to honor the veterans in attendance and pay respects to those who lost their lives in service.
Mayor Billy Phelps gave a speech to begin the program, and a moment of silence was held as the names of fallen soldiers from the city of Morgantown were read.
Honoring veterans is something special to the Butler County community. If you look around the courtyard at the Courthouse, you will see several monuments dedicated to fallen soldiers from different eras, all of whom lost their lives.
Each person honored was at one point a resident of Butler County.
Officials say honoring them is something that the city was built on.
“This county is deeply invested in our military and the years of service. ” Said Mayor Billy Phelps. “Morgantown got its land, the Funderbunk land, from soldiers coming back from the Revolutionary War. It was given to them by the government. So this whole county is a blue-collar, patriotic county.” Phelps added.
