New details in Saturday crash resulting in death of Warren County woman

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A Bowling Green man is charged with vehicular homicide following a crash that claimed the life of a Warren County woman.

According to a uniform citation, Bowling Green Police Department officers responded to the 400 block of Corvette Drive to a head-on collision on the evening of May 2.

Officers say they made contact with 20-year-old Dajuan Sykes, of Bowling Green, who was driving one of the vehicles.

Sykes had slurred speech and slowed responses to police questions, according to the citation.

Officers say Sykes became “mildly irate” while being questioned.

During the investigation, officers say they observed an odor of marijuana coming from Sykes’ vehicle and an odor of alcohol emanating from him. The officer says the determination was made that Sykes was impaired.

Officers conducted a probable cause search of Sykes’ vehicle and located suspected marijuana, other drug paraphernalia, and suspected alcohol in a cup.

According to the citation, 19-year-old Makyah L. Mackey, of Bowling Green, who was driving the second vehicle involved in the crash, was extracted from her vehicle by the Bowling Green Fire Department.

Mackey later died at the Medical Center at Bowling Green.

A witness at the scene told officers that Sykes was allegedly “chasing” a third vehicle. An officer says video surveillance of the incident was reviewed.

Sykes was transported to the Medical Center at Bowling Green for a blood collection kit after a search warrant was obtained.

Sykes was medically cleared and transported to the Warren County Regional Jail.

Sykes is charged with vehicular homicide, wanton endangerment in the first degree, driving under the influence, reckless driving, trafficking in marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The investigation is ongoing.
