WNKY News 40 Health Reports: Thriving With Autism
GLASGOW, Ky. – Autism is a condition which can affect speech and communication skills. And while it’s usually diagnosed by the age of five, symptoms can be present by the second or third year of life.
Since 1970, World Autism Month has been observed every April by organizations like Autism Speaks, a nonprofit dedicated to informing the public about autism and fostering research.
According to Autism Speaks, some of the symptoms of autism include:
- Lack of signs of “happy emotions” such as not smiling or laughing
- Not communicating either with speech or with hands
- Not responding to one’s name
Locally, T.J. Regional Health’s rehabilitation department is working to advance the lives of those diagnosed with autism.
Stephanie Smith, the director of Rehabilitation at T.J. Samson, explained how her staff works with autistic patients. She said they use an approach that spans occupational therapy, speech therapy and even music therapy. She also said patients participate in activities in the community such as going out to restaurants and ordering.
She also has encouraging news when it comes to insurance coverage. She say many times, health insurance covers services such as occupational therapy and speech therapy.
