1 dead, 1 flown after vehicle hits tree in Wolfe County

PINE RIDGE, Ky. – One person is dead and two others are injured after a single-vehicle collision in Wolfe County on Sunday.

According to the Kentucky State Police, troopers received a notification around 10:30 a.m. that morning regarding a fatal collision near the 1200 block of KY 715 in the Pine Ridge community of Wolfe County.

Authorities say a preliminary investigation revealed 23-year-old Darren Johnson of Beattyville was driving northbound on KY 715 when he crossed the center line into the opposite lane and continued off of the road, hitting a tree.

Troopers say Johnson was pronounced dead on scene by the Wolfe County coroner.

Johnson’s passenger, 29-year-old Rebecca Peters of Beattyville, was flown from the scene to the University of Kentucky Hospital and was listed in critical condition as of Sunday, authorities say.

Troopers say a 2-year-old received minor injuries and was transported to Kentucky River Medical Center in Jackson for treatment.

KSP was assisted on scene by Wolfe County Sheriff’s Department, Wolfe County Fire and EMS and Wolfe County Coroner’s Office. The collision remains under investigation.
