Bowling Green Youth Orchestra prepares for 25th anniversary concert

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green Youth Orchestra is celebrating 25 years of developing young musicians across South-Central Kentucky.

Founded in 2001, the program has grown from a small group of fewer than 20 students into a full orchestra drawing participants from multiple counties throughout the region.

Today, students travel from places like Ohio, Simpson, and Barron counties each week, many heading straight from school to rehearsals in Bowling Green.

Conductor Patrick O’Rourke says that dedication is what sets the group apart.

“These are people that definitely go quite literally the extra mile to come and play with us,” O’Rourke said.

For students, the experience goes beyond learning music. Members say the orchestra helps them build friendships and connect with others from different schools and communities.

“It really helps me connect with other people… it just helps me to be more social,” said Bella Dillinger, a student musician.

The program’s impact has been building since its early days. Founding director Pam Thurman says the orchestra has grown significantly over the past two decades.

“We started off with maybe 16 kids… and now to look out and see multiple people in sections… that’s amazing for an orchestra, especially for high school kids,” Thurman said.

Leaders say the lessons learned in the orchestra, like teamwork and discipline, carry far beyond the stage.

“If I practice my part and when I come to rehearsal, everybody benefits… that sense of teamwork really baked into the process helps the students grow,” said Dr. Brian St. John, Director of Orchestras at Western Kentucky University.

To celebrate the milestone, the orchestra will host a 25th anniversary concert featuring both current performers and past conductors.

“All of the former conductors… are all conducting a piece with the group,” O’Rourke said. “So they’ll get to see the history of this ensemble.”

The concert will be held April 27 at SKYPAC, serving as both a celebration of the orchestra’s history and a look ahead to its future.
