Tips to maintain New Year’s resolutions going into 2026
BARREN COUNTY, Ky. – As the New Year approaches, people everywhere will be making resolutions to follow in 2026. After speaking with a local doctor, we can provide some tips on maintaining these goals.
Making a goal for the New Year can sometimes be intimidating and people can sometimes lose track over time.
Dr. William Thornbury, a physician at T.J. Regional Health, says to take it one day at a time.
He says to not look too far into the future and just win the day. He also said it is okay to deviate from your resolutions from time to time, but always make up for it the following day.
When you find yourself not feeling motivated, Thornbury added to look back at the progress you’ve made and how far you have come.
It is also important to not be too hard on yourself and another helpful tip is to find a group that will help keep each other motivated.
“I try to say as a rule, if you wouldn’t say it to one of your good friends, don’t say it to yourself and just say, you know what? I’m trying to do better every day. Get a support group. Get a close friend or colleague or somebody at work or a group of people that can motivate each other to say, when I don’t feel like I want to do it today, when I’m having a tough time, can I lean on you guys to help me?” Thornbury said.
New Year’s resolutions can be hard to follow sometimes, but if you take it one day at a time and find support, it can make things easier.
