MLK Holiday Planning Committee honors Black Achievers at annual event

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Several local leaders were recognized as Black Achievers this past weekend by the MLK Holiday Planning Committee.
Awards were given to honorees for achievements in their respective fields on Saturday, Nov. 8. According to organizers, this is the fifth year Black Achievers has taken place.
“We wanted to recognized our past while honoring our present and future,” wrote Ryan Dearbone, assistant professor of broadcasting at Western Kentucky University and Bowling Green NAACP president.
The following individuals received their respective awards at the UAW Solidarity Hall:
- F.O. Moxley Athletic Award- Deuce Bailey
- Barlow Education Award- Michael Coleman
- Gatewood Community Service Award- George Washington Carver Center
- J.H. Taylor Religion Award- Rev. Stacey Beason & Elder Monica Beason
- J.E. Jones & Margaret Munday Education Award- McKinley Heard
- W.F. Becket Healthcare Award- Anna Lewis
- Cornelius A. Martin Business Award- Byron Carothers
Dearbone says the awards are named after trailblazers in the community that laid the foundation in those fields.
