SKYCTC hosts cybersecurity summit

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As our society advances, it is becoming even more important to protect yourself and your business online.

That is why Southcentral Kentucky Community & Technical College hosted a summit Thursday teaching people just that. The Cyber Safe Summit aimed to educate what you can do to protect yourself and what you can do to help yourself in the future.

Much has changed in just the decade alone. What practices were considered normal not too long ago could now be considered dangerous to your cyber security now.

“It’s now commonplace or maybe ten years ago you would just use the same password for everything. Well, now we know that’s not a good practice. You should use individual individualize or unique passwords for everything. So you can’t bilaterally or laterally move across different services to protect your data. For if one like your Netflix account gets hacked, your, HIPAA information doesn’t get breached on some medical site. So usually it’s just user training and teaching people. The underlying factors are the low hanging fruit of protecting your data is equally important, right now,” said Nick Conder, an information and cybersecurity consultant with CSI WEB.

There are many different ways to protect yourself online, however staying vigilant is your best form of protection.

“Everything should be verified. When somebody tells you something, you should go verify that with somebody you trust. And I think a lot of that is what people forget today, even if it seems right, doesn’t make it right. And you should always, always verify, check and triple check in some instances if it’s something important to you,” Conder said.

Be sure to consider methods like multi-factor authentication and using different passwords for each account that you own.
