Warren County Sheriff’s Office to begin property tax collection Nov. 1

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – The Warren County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind property owners that property tax season is right around the corner.

Starting Nov. 1, you can begin paying taxes on land, homes and businesses. Now, if you bought a property this year, be sure to check with the previous owner to make sure your taxes are taken care of. Property taxes are mailed to the owner of property as of Jan. 1, so it’s important to stay on top of them.

“Sometimes, what people don’t understand is the tax bills were mailed to where the property owner is on January the first. You might have bought it in July, but it can be mailed to the property owner on July 1. So it’s incumbent upon you to make sure, those that property taxes pay because the new homeowner may not actually receive that tax bill. The previous homeowner may look at it go, I don’t know the property more here. Throw in the trash,” said Warren County sheriff Brett Hightower.

There is an incentive to pay early, as a 2% discount will be taken from the taxes if you pay in the month of November. In December, you will have to pay the face value of the tax, and if you fail to pay the tax by the end of the year, a penalty will be added on to the final total.

In 2024, a little under $120 million was collected, with 54% of that heading toward the school system, 17% going to the state and another 17% to the county. Some of the taxes also helps fund the public library, improve roads and pay salaries for law enforcement officers.
