Extreme heat causes serious health risks
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Over the next few days, south-central Kentucky will be experiencing extreme heat that could lead to serious health risks. Many experts say the high temperatures are not just uncomfortable—they’re dangerous.
Clinical educator Casey McCoy from Med Center EMS warns that heat exhaustion can quickly turn into heat stroke if left untreated.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, nausea, vomiting and profuse sweating. As the condition worsens, it can lead to slurred speech, loss of consciousness, and the absence of sweating—signs of heat stroke. To stay safe, McCoy recommends not just drinking water, but also replenishing electrolytes with sports drinks.
EMTs and first responders are advising people to avoid being outside for long periods. They strongly encourage limiting strenuous activity during peak heat hours.
