Teen rescued in Marshall County flood waters
MARSHALL Co., Ky.- Flooding in parts of Marshall County has led to ongoing clean-up efforts. One mother, Ashlee Estes, shared that she was shocked by the amount of flooding she witnessed. Estes says, “I mean this is not uncommon for the area that they’re in, but to that extreme, you know, and moving fast. And I don’t know that we’ve ever seen it quite that deep.”
Estes’ worry truly set after learning her son Layne was stuck in that flood, holding onto a tree as he waited to be saved from a strong current and inches of flood water.
Ashlee Estes shared that she doesn’t believe she’s ever cried or prayed so hard in her entire life. Her son Layne Bullock is an experienced 4-wheel driver and on Sunday he and his best friend Landon Copeland wanted to look at the damage.
But when they arrived, the boys didn’t realize how deep the water was and Bullock ended up getting swept away in the flood water.
Bullock spoke on the experience, saying, “I tried to get out of it, and I got out of it, and then we was trying to go back the other way and then it just kind of slid off the current pushed me off into the ditch and then it just went from there.”
His friend, Landon Copeland, stood on the side of the bank. He shared with officials that he knew he wouldn’t be able to do anything for his friend except call for help. Copeland called Bullock’s mother Ashlee and 911 immediately.
While on their way to help, Estes and her husband immediately called 911. Arriving on the scene where multiple people from the Marshall County Rescue Squad.
Chief Kenny Pratt with the Rescue Squad pulled Layne to safety. He says this was just another example of why everyone needs to be cautious and alert during flooding.
Layne and Landon walked away from this experience unharmed but with advice for those thinking about driving during flash floods.
The boys say, “it’d be smart and best of your interest not to, because stuff like that can happen very fast.”
