Glasgow Fire Station 2 offering Christmas tree dipping
GLASGOW, Ky. – It is that time of the year where families head to the tree farm to pick up the Christmas tree.
After the family picks out your tree, the Glasgow Fire Department says their Station Number 2 should be your next stop.
Glasgow Fire Department Station No. 2 is hosting free ‘tree dips’ at the station to help prevent your tree from going up in flames. The liquid mixture is made of borax and boric acid makes the tree fireproof and greatly reduces the risk of fire.
The department has seen a slowdown in recent years due to the sales of fake trees. Even with the slow down, they stress the importance of dipping, because it only takes a few second before your tree can become fully engulfed.
“Real trees catch fire, they dry out and they go up like tinder boxes sometimes if there’s a electrical problem or whatever it could be. So we have a mixture of boric acid and borax that we dip the trees in, and it’s basically acts as a flame retardant. You can actually dip a piece of napkin in that treated water and it will not burn,” Glasgow fire sergeant Nick Swayne said.
Station 2 will be dipping trees every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. until Christmas Eve. However, the trees aren’t the only thing that can go up in smoke. Candles, lights, and other electrical decorations can cause fire as well, so be sure to check your decorations for any damage, and if you plan on leaving home for vacation, make sure you turn your lights off and ask someone to check on your home to make sure everything stays right this Christmas season.
You can find station two at 130 Cross Street in Glasgow.
