First snowfall expected across Kentucky starting tonight

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The first wintry weather mix is expected Thursday afternoon into Friday morning for much of Kentucky.
Transportation officials are reminding Kentuckians to practice safe driving habits.
Drivers are encouraged to remain aware of Kentucky Transportation Cabinet snow fighting crews that may be on the roadways.
Right now, officials say forecasts for northern and central regions of Kentucky call for rain and snow with potential accumulation and wind gusts exceeding 30 miles per hour, which could create hazardous driving conditions.
“Our top priority is making sure our families are safe on the roads during their commutes to work and school,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “Our highway crews have an eye fixed on the forecasts, monitoring for any possible effects on travel in order to keep Kentuckians safe. We’re also encouraging folks to stay weather-aware, and if there is inclement weather – slow down and increase the following distance from the car ahead of you.”
Transportation officials say KYTC highway technicians have salt and plow trucks ready as they monitor weather conditions.
“Despite warmer temperatures in Central Kentucky, there is a likelihood that snow can accumulate during brief periods of heavy precipitation and could create slick road conditions,” KYTC secretary Jim Gray said. “While our crews are standing by to help keep traffic moving safely, we want everyone on the road to stay safe by slowing down, eliminating distractions and buckling up. And if you see our crews at work, please give them room.”
Driver Tips
Motorists are encouraged to prepare and to stay safe by following these tips:
- Alter travel plans to avoid driving during the peak of weather activity.
- Drive with a full tank of gas and pack an emergency car kit that contains essential items like blankets, ice scrapers, jumper cables, a flashlight, a cellphone charger, nonperishable snacks and a first-aid kit should you get stranded on the road.
- Winterize your vehicle. Check your car battery, tire pressure and tread, and brakes. Ensure your heater, defroster, headlights and windshield wipers are working properly.
- When snow and/or ice are on roadways, drive slowly no matter what type of vehicle you drive. It takes more time and distance to stop your vehicle in poor weather, so brake early and slowly.
- Pay attention to weather advisories and allow more time to travel for routine commutes. Expect delays.
- Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shaded areas. These are all candidates for developing “black ice” – a thin coating of clear ice that can form on the paved surface that may be difficult to see.
- Maintain a safe distance from snowplows and other heavy highway equipment, and do not pass snowplows on the shoulder.
- Eliminate distractions while driving, such as using a phone and or eating.
