WKU professor discusses why money dominates political campaigns

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – From commercials to text messages to even letters mailed to your home, politicians are always looking to add more money to their campaigns.

This year, however, is projected to be the most expensive political season in American history. Much has changed overtime, though, and practices that were seen as below a candidate are now socially expectable.

News 40 spoke to a WKU professor, who attributed technology and the ways candidates campaign to why dollars have increased over the years during election season.

“Campaigns have really changed over time in a variety of ways. One is that campaigns just became way more national than they used to be, and that’s more expensive. That when, you know, in the very early parts of American history, presidents didn’t campaign at all or it was considered uncouth to campaign” said professor of political science, Dr. Jeff Budziak.

Budziak says that inventions like radio and television play an important role as to why it’s become so expensive to run. He also says that with America’s loose regulations on political donations, we may continue to see increases in campaign spending.
