Logan County events to celebrate African American freedom through Aug. 8

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. –  Communities across western Kentucky celebrate freedom for African Americans on Aug. 8.

This powerful emancipation celebration unites African Americans. It also gives people the chance to honor and remember those who were set free.

Michael Morrow, the director of the Seek Museum, shares some of the history that motivated African American people to celebrate.

He says, “Freedom was a valuable thing, you know? People, what, 250, 300 years enslavement. So when freedom came, it was just a joyful day. What do they call it today – or Jubilee? It’s very important that we remember the day of Jubilee to honor our ancestors.”

The celebration will begin the Wednesday before Aug. 8 with a church service that continues throughout the week with a kiddie pageant, a concert and so much more.
