Car Seat Safety Check Up at Glasgow Police Department

GLASGOW, Ky. – The Glasgow Police Department along with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety held a small event today meant to give families and their children, instructions on how to properly install a car seat and replace some if need be.

Officers and trained car seat technicians installed new car seats and checked already buckled car seats for the local community on Thursday, several families coming to the Glasgow Police Department to take advantage of the free event. News 40 spoke to one local mother who said today was a nice surprise for her, receiving a free car seat after techs discovered one of her two car seats was expired.

We also spoke to an instructor by the name of Sharon Rengers, who is a registered nurse with Norton Children’s Hospital and a Coordinator of Child Passenger Safety with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety who gave an interesting statistic. Rengers said around 70 percent of people do not install their car seat properly and every mistake adds on to the rate of failure of the car seat in the event of a crash, which Rengers said is one of the highest causes of child death in the country.

Rengers urged that everyone take the time to attend a class or diligently read the owner’s manual when installing a car seat, and GPD said they plan to have another check in the fall of 2024.
