BGPD spreads awareness for Motorcycle Safety Month

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With May being Motorcycle Safety Month, the Bowling Green Police Department is sharing tips for awareness.

Drivers are encouraged to be alert and share the road with motorcyclists. When following a motorcycle, increase the distance of your vehicle away from the motorcycle and allow extra room for them.

Suggestions from the BGPD to motorcyclists are:

  • Know the limitations of your motorcycle.
  • Ride to the limit of your skill level.
  • Know the bike’s braking distance.
  • Practice object-avoidant drills as a precaution.
  • Make sure every system of the motorcycle is in working order.
  • Always wear a helmet and protective gear.
  • Avoid blind spots of vehicles.
  • Anticipate the movements of other drivers.

Warren County is considered the most dangerous county in Kentucky to drive a motorcycle with five fatal crashes in 2023. Riders over 21 are not required by Kentucky law to wear a helmet, yet it could save a life.
