Briarwood Elementary Archery Sets Their Sights on National Tournament

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Thursday, students from across the United States will gather in Louisville for the NASP Eastern Nationals Archery Tournament, and News 40’s Cole Scott has more on one Warren County school that’s preparing to ready, aim, and fire for the first time on the big stage.

Briarwood Elementary’s archery team is headed to the national tournament for the first time in school history, and members of the team are excited about getting to represent their school by shooting bows and arrows.

“Very fun,” fifth grader Nia Hanlon said, “it’s like one of my favorite sports.”

After their performance at the state tournament on March 29, the team qualified for the next level, and a couple archers believe that the experience will prove to be beneficial.

“Well, at state it was more of a challenge,” fifth grader Nico Nero said, “but now, we’re like ready for it.”

“For some of us, state was just another tournament,” fourth grader Brooks Gary said, “but we all knew it wasn’t.”

The national tournament may be held just a few hours from Bowling Green, but schools from all across America will be traveling to Louisville.

“We looked the other day, and I was telling some students that there’s teams from like Texas, New York,” Briarwood Elementary Archery Coach Sarah Anderson said, “and so I’m like, you all are one of many schools who’s able to attend this tournament, so, it is an honor and a privilege for us to be able to go.”

With the Huskies slotted to compete on Thursday at 9 and 10. 15 a. m., their coach believes that the sky is the limit.

“I expect them to go in and have a great time,” Anderson said. “This is like, I’m not going to say it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it is. It’s a great opportunity for them, try their best and have fun.”
