Save the gourds! Compost Bowling Green holds pumpkin collection
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – If you’re a fan of sustainability and getting the most out of your food, this November, you can take part in a cool community initiative.
Compost Bowling Green is a business that was started up by Charlie O’Connell in 2022 to address organic waste in Bowling Green and Warren County. O’Connell told News 40 that he and his wife own a farm out in the county, so gardening and sustainability have been part of their lifestyle for a while.
Last fall, O’Connell decided that all the pumpkins he saw around town could be recycled the same way people recycle their Christmas trees, so he partnered with the Community Farmer’s Market on Nashville Rd. to centralize efforts to conserve food and save the environment. The business owner said landfills are big emitters of greenhouse gases and the less we can put into them, the better.
Both Compost Bowling Green and the Community Farmer’s Market are encouraging the community to drop off their pumpkins, squash and such, at the market in the back parking lot. Drop off is the first full week of November.
