2026 Football Frenzy Preview: Edmonson County Wildcats
BROWNSVILLE, Ky. – High School football is just one week away, and in our next Football Frenzy preview, presented by Bowling Green Fireplace & Grill, we check out the Edmonson County Wildcats.
“ Every year the team is a new team. It’s never the same year to year, you know, we’re just trying to build and get this team as good as we can get it,” head coach Justin Vessels said.
The Wildcats, off the heels of a 2-8 campaign, are leaning into senior leadership as week one nears.
Some of the seniors suiting up for their final season have grown comfortable in Coach Vessels’ system.
“It’s really taught me some responsibility,” senior tight end/defensive end Carson Cole said. “They’ve really brought my love back into the game from my freshman year, and they’ve really helped me just want to actually play.”
Others are brand new to the scene but share an excitement and enthusiasm as if they’ve hit the field since day one.
That includes Haley Shields, who’s taken over as the team’s kicker.
She’s set to play football for the first time after an extended career in soccer.
“It’s definitely different because, you know, a soccer ball’s round and a football’s odd shaped, but I feel like I’ve picked it up pretty quick,” Shields said. “I’ve played sports forever, ever since I was little bitty, so I feel like that I’ll be able to adapt very well.”
With just a few days left until the first matchup, Shields and the rest of the Wildcats are making sure that their minds are right and their plays are tight, ready to be put on display when the football is kicked off.
“We just need to execute, play physical football, don’t turn the ball over on offense, fly around and try to create turnovers on defense. Be solid in the special teams, just winning football,” Vessels said.
“Always improving, I feel like that’s every team’s goal and ambition is just to take that first game and hope to be 100% better at the end of the season than you were at the beginning of the season,” Shields said.
Edmonson County is scheduled to start the season on August 21 against Grayson County at the home of the Cougars.
