Picking the perfect pumpkin

SOUTH CENTRAL, KY.- For those of you who are ready to take in the great outdoors as the temperatures dip this weekend. Now is your chance especially if you’re searching for the perfect pumpkin to carve or a fall festival hay ride with the family.  There are plenty of places to visit across south central Kentucky.

It’s finally fall and you may think the best thing about this season is that you finally have the chance to visit the pumpkin patch.

The co-owner of Jackson’s Orchard, Jonathan Price loves what he does, and describe what it would be like if you go.

“It would be an outdoor experience. Everything from the opportunity to take a hayride, pick a pumpkin, and you know, it’s finally starting to feel a little bit more like fall.”

Price is also shares what motivates and inspires him. He says, “It’s encouraging to see a kid get off the wagon back in the back at the pumpkin patch and, you know, scream with excitement running in there trying to find their perfect pumpkin made. It makes all this worthwhile, that’s for sure.

One business Barry Whitaker has given away thousands of pumpkins over the past 8 years, and this year he’s giving away 2215 pumpkins right in his front yard for free.

He says, “There are all different kinds. We’ve got probably ten different kinds of pumpkins here. So big ones, little ones, all different kinds. Carving pumpkins is always what I loved when I was a kid, so that’s- that’s what I like seeing all these kids to be able to do.”

You may not know which pumpkin to pick, but looking for the pumpkin is all apart of the fun! There’s a lot of thrill that comes with the  hunt. It is exciting for everyone who visits Whitaker’s front yard, but it’s the memories visitors leave that makes a lasting impact.

He also shares, “I think god gave me the money and the ability to do this for the kids. Just the looks on the kids’ faces and they see me through the years and say, “Oh, he’s a pumpkin guy.” I’ll keep doing this until I can’t no more.

The Jackson’s Orchard pumpkin festival is Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00… And Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00.
