AEDs may soon be mandated inside Kentucky schools
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The use of AEDs in Kentucky schools might soon be mandated, thanks to a senate bill.
The amendment to the already solidified law would mandate that schools have AEDs present and require schools to have emergency response plans in place. The amendment would put in place a trust fund from which schools could apply for grants to purchase AEDs, something that could help save a students life in the case of cardiac arrest.
News 40 spoke to Michael LaSala, an EMS field supervisor at the Med Center for his input on AEDs. LaSala said that a defibrillator is a necessary tool.
“In my line of work, seconds can save lives. The quicker you can start CPR and defib, the better the chance of survival.”
Over the past few months, more than one incident has occurred that would foster conversations on making schools safer along with increased attention on athletes.
