‘Keep It Rollin’: Lost River Elementary BETA students collect rolling backpacks for foster kids
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- No matter what, keep it rollin’!
“It just feels good to have smiles on kids’ faces,” said Lost River Elementary 6th grade student and BETA Club member Edmir ‘Eddy’ Sakanovic.
The BETA students at Lost River Elementary are asking for donations of rolling backpacks for their service project “Keep It Rollin”.
“Our rolling backpack program is for foster care students who don’t really have much to go from home to home,” said Sakanovic.
They will fill the backpacks with things like a stuffed animal, fleece blanket, coloring supplies, a book and more, to make every foster situation feel a bit more like home.
“We want the kids to have something whenever they move houses,” said 6th grade BETA Club member Edin Salihovic.
For 5th grade student and BETA club member Tori Churchwell, she knows what it feels like.
“I wanted to be a part of this project because I have been a foster care kid and it was really hard not seeing my parents,” said Churchwell.
She was in foster care when she was nine years old.
“It was pretty scary not seeing my parents, but we would have visits from time to time. And I couldn’t really see my brothers or anyone else in my family,” said Churchwell.
She said these rolling backpacks and supplies will be so helpful…she never had anything like that when she was going through it.
“It was kind of like I moved, I grabbed a few pairs of clothes and then I just moved,” said Churchwell.
The kids hope this small gesture has a big impact.
“I feel like they’re gonna be really happy because they’re gonna have somebody that loves for them,” said Salihovic.
If you want to donate a rolling backpack, you can drop it off at Lost River Elementary.
