Family lost everything in fire, surprised with $5,000 donation from community

BARREN CO., Ky.-“It’s just an uphill battle,” said Dallies Wood.

A battle to heal and rebuild after tragedy, but one that the Barren County community has decided shouldn’t be fought alone.

“It means the community has given me and my wife and kids a chance to get back on the right track,” said Wood.

On the morning of January 19th, the Wood family lost nearly everything. Their home in Glasgow caught fire with their father, Dallies, still inside.

“It was devastating because I was in the home when it caught fire and I was the only one there but luckily I managed to get out, the things you lose you never regain,” said Wood.

Since then the family has been separated, living in different apartments while trying to get back on their feet.

Now with a life changing gift from the community, that’s all about to change.

“Today is an exciting day because Barren County has took care of its own,” said Barren County Judge-Executive Michael Hale.

The Girls and Boys Club, Bridge Kentucky and First Baptist Church raised enough money together to finance the $5,000 down payment for the wood family’s new home.

They’ll finally be back together again.

“I’m just happy we can all be back together, since I haven’t lived with my parents since the fire happened. Now that we’re gonna have enough room to live together again it’s just…I haven’t lived with my parents in 6 months so that’s a big deal for me,” said Alyssa Wood.

Dallies is on oxygen and can’t go up and down stairs…at his new home, he’ll finally be on one level. The family couldn’t be happier.
