Bowling Green Parks and Rec offering free fitness class at outdoor fitness zone
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Commonwealth frequents the lists of top 10 most obese states in the nation.
Bowling Green Parks and Recreation is trying to do something to address that.
With a new outdoor fitness zone, they can now do just that.
“We want to look at getting more people involved,” said Frank Lamanna, fitness and wellness supervisor for Bowling Green Parks and Rec. “Sometimes people want to partake in fitness, but they just don’t know the right way to do it or what exactly to do.”
Holding a free, weekly fitness class is a way to fix that, which is why the department will begin hosting a workout class every Monday at 5 p.m. (weather permitting) at the new outdoor fitness zone at Preston Miller Park.
“We thought that once we had this park built, we would try to offer some structured classes which would help those people that are just wanting to get into fitness and don’t really have the know how,” added Lamanna.
Members of the Bowling Green Parks and Rec fitness staff will be on hand to teach people how to properly use the 25 different pieces of equipment, as well as ensure they’re safely doing the exercises.
“The purpose behind the classes as well is to help people reach their goals safely and effectively and be the most productive for the time that they’re using the equipment,” Lamanna said.
The class is open for kids and adults because they want the classes to help anyone, and everyone, reach their fitness goals.
“The equipment here is accessible for anybody,” said Lamanna, “whether it’s young people, older people, people that might have disabilities, people that use wheelchairs.”
For some, going to a gym can be intimidating and costly.
This weekly class aims to address both those concerns, whether you’ve been working out your whole life, or you’re just starting your fitness journey.
“Here, you work at your own ability, work at your own pace,” added Lamanna. “There’s not a lot of people around so you don’t have to worry about people watching you or making fun of you. The nice thing about being outdoors and open pretty much any time is that you can come at your time, work out at your terms, and not have those intimidations that might bother some people.”
The outdoor fitness zone is free for anyone to use.
It is open from sunrise to 11 p.m. daily.
