Icy Conditions Can Lead To Power Outages

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- When the weather turns dicey and there’s potential for freezing rain, sleet, and snow, that can make areas vulnerable to experience numerous power disruptions in the wintertime. The last round of Wintry weather caused thousands of power outages state-wide.

“Most common outages are ice on the lines or, wind and ice or ice on the trees, and what’s even worse is a combination of ice and wind together. Those are the main causes of outages we see in the winter time.” Said Kim Phelps, Senior director of communications in public relations at Warren Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation (WRECC).

When ice builds up on trees and power lines, it can weigh them down, causing trees to snap or power lines to topple over. Freezing rain is a common cause for ice on power lines.

If you experience an outage, Phelps says to report the outage, there are multiple ways to report.
