WNKY News 40 Weather Reports: BG Public Works Prepares For Winter
Find Out How The City Plans And Prepares For Potential Winter Snow & Ice
BOWLING GREEN,Ky.- When the weather turns colder this winter that means there’s potential for dealing with snowy and icy roadways. Meteorologist Darius Mack visited Bowling Green Public Works Operations area to dive into what the city does to prepare for any harsh winter weather conditions.
“As the weather turns bad, we don’t just bring out the plows and hope that everything works. Okay. The results that you see as we’re plowing is definitely because of preparation.” Said Andy Souza, director of public works for the city of Bowling Green.
Souza mentioned that preparations for snow routes and purchasing salt shipments begin as early as the hot summer months.
“That’s when we purchased the salt that you see behind me because it’s cheaper and we can get it in. And then from there we move into October and we have the teams come out and actually do a full dress rehearsal.” -Souza
Crews have test driven routes just this past October and are positioned for the season’s potential snow and ice.
At the operations area, there is roughly 2,000 tons of salt that is ready to be used to tackle any possible winter worries. Souza referenced that last January, two snowy days prompted the use of 500 tons of salt. The Public works department is available to order more salt if needed.
Plowing begins when there’s at least two inches of snowfall, or an extreme amount of snow is expected. For snow removal. The city is divided into ten zones. To help workers get around efficiently, Souza recommends removing your car off the side of the road and parking in the driveway if possible.
