WKU, Helton in talks on 4-year contract extension

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – On Saturday afternoon, ESPN Insider Pete Thamel released a report stating that Western Kentucky University and football head coach Tyson Helton are in talks for a four-year contract extension, keeping Helton on the Hill through 2028.

Further details on the agreement have yet to be released.

In six seasons at WKU, Helton has led the Tops to a 48-32 record, with trips to six straight bowl games (four wins) and two Conference USA championship game appearances.

In Helton’s first season (2019), he brought home the C-USA Coach of the Year award, marking just the sixth time in program history for a Hilltopper coach to take the award, and first since Jack Harbaugh won the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2000.

As the team begins a postseason transformation, with a higher number of players than normal entering the transfer portal, Helton will now get to work to bring together another exciting roster, with sights set on the 2025 C-USA championship crown.
