WKU BSB: Strong Hitting Powers WKU to Win Over Louisville

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Baseball (14-11) defeated Louisville (16-9) 10-5 Tuesday evening at Nick Denes Field.
The Hilltoppers were led offensively by the duo of Camden Ross and JP Acosta, who each notched three hits on Tuesday. WKU pitching allowed only six Cardinal hits for an offense that averaged over 11 per game going into the matchup. Louisville native Kaine Samuels was credited with the win, tossing three strikeouts in two innings of work out of the bullpen.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Hayden Robbins led off the first for WKU and got aboard with a base hit. Robbins was followed by Lane Arroyos who doubled into the left field corner to score Robbins from first.

Kyle Hayes lifted a double into right center to score Arroyos and give the Hilltoppers a two-run lead.

Camden Ross grounded to the third baseman and a throwing error scored Hayes as Ross advanced to second on the play.

The fifth hit of the inning for WKU, this one by third baseman JP Acosta scored Camden Ross to give WKU a 4-0 lead which would remain as the Cardinals recorded the final two outs of the frame.

The Hilltoppers finished with four runs on five hits in their half of the first.

In the top of the fourth Louisville plated two runs to cut the WKU lead in half.

The bottom of the inning started with an Ethan Reynolds walk. Arroyos followed with a base knock to advance Reynolds to second. A groundout moved the runners over to second and third. Ross followed and on a 3-2 pitch lined a base hit into left field to score Reynolds and give the Hilltoppers a three-run lead.

Louisville cut into the lead with a one-out double to make it 5-3 in the top of the fifth. A two-run home run followed to even the score at five all.

WKU loaded the bases in the sixth and JP Acosta lined a ball to the left fielder that was dropped to score Arroyos and give WKU the lead.

Parker Coley led off the seventh for WKU and struck a ball into right center field for the third triple of the season for the Hilltoppers and the first for Coley.

Arroyos followed and was hit by a pitch and stole second to move into scoring position when Hayes notched his second double of the night to clear the bases and give WKU an 8-5 lead.

A throwing error by the Cardinal catcher allowed Hayes to score, then Acosta laced the second double of the frame for WKU down the left field line to give WKU a five-run lead.

WKU would shut down the Cardinals in the final two innings for a 10-5 victory.

Mick Uebelhor got the starting nod for the Hilltoppers on Tuesday evening. Uebelhor tossed 2.0 innings on Tuesday and recorded three strikeouts with one hit and one walk against seven batters faced.

Out of the bullpen WKU used Bryson Vawter, Jude Favela, Sam Frizzi, Dominic Monaco, Kaine Samuels, and Conner Wolf.

Samuels matched a team-high three strikeouts, allowing just one hit in 2.0 innings of work Tuesday. Samuels also earned the win, marking the first for the native of Louisville.

JP Acosta went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a double.

Acosta has now recorded a three hit game two times this season.

Parker Coley subbed into the game as a right fielder and went 2-for-2, recording the third triple of the season for WKU.

Kyle Hayes finished 2-for-4 with a team best three RBIs to go along with two runs.

Both of Hayes’ hits on Tuesday were doubles that resulted in RBIs.

Hayes now has seven multi-hit games this year, including two of his last three.

Lane Arroyos went 2-for-4 with a team high three runs along with an RBI and a walk.

Arroyos was one of four Hilltoppers that recorded an extra base hit in the game.

Tuesday’s crowd of 1,694 marked the largest at Nick Denes Field since March 29, 2016 in a game against Louisville when 1,723 attended the game.

The Hilltoppers now have five wins over Power Four opponents marking the most in a season since 2011. That season WKU earned their fifth win over such an opponent in a 15-5 win over No. 25 Louisville.

WKU’s 16 hits match a season high. The other being WKU’s 12-4 win over SEMO on February 20.
QUOTABLE
On the win head coach Marc Rardin said “We needed it. A positive way to get back on track. We had a great practice last night with a lot of energy and positivity about everything and to come out and do what we did, especially to start off the game, eased the dugout and to continue that throughout the game was great.”
On the crowd, Rardin added “It means so much to these guys. The excitement, the energy and you could see it in our dugout. They were feeding off the crowd and wanted to do their part in playing well.”
