Winter weather driving safety tips

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Navigating the winter snow is not easy, especially for people heading back to work in this wild winter weather.

This winter weather may impact the way you drive. When you have places to go, remaining cautious may not be your first thought, but taking your time should be a top priority.

Kentucky State Police trooper Katan Parker shares what he sees when he’s on duty when it snows.

Parker says, “The roadways aren’t really in our favor right now, you know, so cold. It is just freezing. Whatever thin layer of water that’s on the road, make it a thin sheet of ice. It’s hard to tell.”

As the snow and temperatures fall, paying closer attention to the roads will be vital. There’s an even greater chance for snow to become ice. You may feel like going faster than normal, but driving at a safe speed does more good than harm.

John Powell, the owner of Lifesaver Driving Academy in Bowling Green, shares that there are not many benefits when driving aggressively either on dry ground or in snow, and people must slow down.

While it is important to remain safe, it’s also important to be prepared for any accident that may occur. You can prepare by having a portable charger a bright- blanket a few snacks and water inside of your vehicle.
