WNKY News 40 Weather Reports: Bowling Green White Christmas Odds
A White Christmas Is Rare In Our Region
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Christmas is almost here, and many are wondering, Are we getting a white Christmas this year? Shane Holinde at Kentucky Mesonet and Climate Center recounts the last time Bowling Green’s Christmas Day weather was truly festive.
“Our most recent White Christmas happened two years ago when we had a very strong arctic cold front sweep through on the night of December 22nd where temperatures crashed from around 50 degrees to subzero, along with wind chills 20 to 30 below.” Said Shane.
The Arctic front was one to remember, dumping 1 to 3 inches of snow across Kentucky.
Prior to the Christmas in 2022, the last time there was a White Christmas was in 2010.
“We had four inches on the ground observed thanks to a winter storm that came through the night prior on Christmas Eve.” Holinde mentioned.
WHAT IS A WHITE CHRISTMAS?
A White Christmas defined by the National Weather Service is when there is around an inch or more of snow on the ground on the morning of Christmas.
When looking at the total number of occurrences of a White Christmas in Bowling Green with over a span of 130 years, there’s only been 9 total. Which historically makes our odds of seeing a White Christmas nearly non- existent.
On Record, Christmas of 1963 holds the highest snow depth on record with half a foot of snow on the ground.
If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas this year, you’ll have to dream elsewhere.
