Where to donate your Christmas tree this year

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Christmas may be over, but that doesn’t mean your Christmas tree still isn’t useful.

Whether you prefer to keep the tree up a little longer or take it down as the new year approaches, you can donate your natural tree for a new purpose.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife says their tree recycling program allows trees to take on a new life as a habitat for fish.

Donated Christmas trees will be lowered to different depths in several lakes and reservoirs across Kentucky to provide places for fish to feed, shelter and thrive, according to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Just make sure your natural tree is free of any decorations, such as lights or ornaments, and you’re good to go!

Starting Dec. 26, the department is accepting tree drop offs at the following locations in Bowling Green:

  • Southwest District Fisheries Office
    • Located about 1 mile down Bennett Lane just past Schneider Lane intersection
    • Contact: Erin Cummins at 270-746-7127
  • Cabela’s Outpost
    • Located at 3395 Nell O’Bryan Court, Bowling Green, Kentucky 42103
    • Contact: David Asp at 270-936-8320
