Western Kentucky University group hosts DEI protest
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Some students at Western Kentucky University took part in a state-wide protest of the elimination of DEI programs on college campuses this afternoon.
Today, February 28th, students across Kentucky are hosting a coordinated series of protests against several legislations. House Bill 4, which was introduced earlier this month, aims to restrict diversity-related curriculum, defund DEI initiatives, and dissolve existing DEI offices at public state universities.
Although the bill has not advanced, some institutes have already taken action to remove DEI programs from their campuses.
The student-led coalition in Kentucky believes that exercising their right to protest is necessary to push back against the government and universities. A Junior at WKU, Nicholas Crowell, says it was “important on our campus to show that we are not unseen.”
Students at WKU were holding up flags and chanting, guest speakers were invited to discuss various issues.
Western Kentucky University is 1 of 8 state colleges seeing these types of protest, including the University of Kentucky and Morehead State.
